FCA Endurance of South Metro Atlanta Team

Rock n Roll Savannah Marathon & Half marathon 2011

From Jason Morrison - an email that was sent to FCA.

I wanted to drop you an email to let you know of an amazing experience that my wife and I shared this weekend at the Rock N' Roll Marathon in Savannah. This would be my wife's first half-marathon and my first full marathon. The Cliff Notes version of our story is that this time last year I was heading not toward a finish line, but a heart attack. We made a decision to change our lives and in December started that journey.

Since that time I have lost 80 pounds and ran my first 5K in March. The decision to tackle a full marathon came back in June and in July I started preparing for it.

I wrote a rather lengthy race recap here (http://ourtimetochange.tumblr.com/post/12511536072/my-first-marathon-experience) which has more thoughts on the race itself.

What I wanted to tell you was how important of a role the FCA team ended up playing in our experience. It defies reason and can only be explained by divine intervention. Most likely compared to many of the FCA team, my wife and I are still very much rookies. We do not consider ourselves superior athletes and do not expect to finish first at any of our races.

What we do expect is to give every last single part of us at every race.

So joining the FCA team is a little on the intimidating side at times.

During our run this past Saturday we both encountered many FCA members, but the timing was so amazing. My wife shared with me how Steve White from Savannah had found her and ran with her encouraging her to keep pushing. She told me later how tired she was but how his presence and words, reminding her of scripture, helped keep her feet moving and her mind focused on finishing the race. Steve would also find me and we talked for a little bit before he pushed forward. I shared with him briefly my journey and that this was my first full marathon.

As I neared the finish line, I started to see the fencing covered with spectators. The route took a right turn which was the finish. I had nothing left in me and was not sure how I was still moving forward. On the left I spotted one of those beautiful bright yellow jerseys and he saw mine. He said "Hey! Team FCA! Finish strong brother!" And he reached out to give me a high five. I have absolutely zero doubts that he was placed there because I was so exhausted.

The experience of running my first full marathon is something that I will never forget. But having people see the FCA jersey and shout encouragement and support was unparalleled. I have never had that before.

I want nothing more than to honor God with all that I am doing. I have been told that my journey has inspired many around me and I know that there were runners in Savannah who finished because of my encouragement.

I want nothing more than to get better and to in turn be that support for others. My wife and I want to continue participating in endurance sports and are excited about where 2012 will lead us and what kind of impact we can have around us.
